We celebrate 50 years of the Class 50 diesel-electric locomotive.
Tickets available to book!
The British Rail Class 50 was a class of 50 diesel locomotives designed to haul express passenger trains at 100mph. Built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows between 1967 and 1968, the Class 50's were initially on a 10-year lease from English Electric Leasing, and were employed hauling express passenger trains on the, then non-electrified, section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Scotland.
Alongside our own Class 50s, there will be a number of visiting Class 50s too, for three days of 'Hoover' action!
Class 50s attending: 50007 Hercules, 50008 Thunderer, 50017 Royal Oak, 50026 Indomitable (subject to completion of engine repairs), 50031 Hood, 50033 Glorious (subject to completion of overhaul), 50035 Ark Royal, 50044 Exeter (subject to completion of engine repairs), 50049 Defiance and 50050 Fearless.
— Intensive operation of Class 50 hauled services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with local services between Kidderminster and Bewdley too.
— Kidderminster Diesel Depot on Friday and Saturday from 10am — 4pm for guided tours. The visits will be escorted and take place on the hour, with the last one starting at 3pm. Please book your place at The Fifty Fund’s sales stand at Kidderminster Station on the day
— Commemorative merchandise.
— An exhibition of Class 50 memorabilia will be on display in The Engine House at Highley. Thanks to the various owners, we have been able to secure a selection of original Class 50 nameplates, as well as other artefacts including ‘flame cut’ number panels from several long-lost Class 50s. We are hoping to have several 5-inch gauge Class 50 models operating, and you will also be able to catch a glimpse of the latest model Class 50s, with early examples from manufacturers Heljan (O gauge) and Dapol (N gauge) on show.
— As a fitting tribute to the Class 50 story, we also plan to have a Class 40 locomotive on display. The Class 40s emerged from Vulcan Foundry a decade earlier than the ‘50s’, but in many ways were their forerunners. Owned by the Class Forty Preservation Society, the ‘40’ will act as standby locomotive for the gala and will be on display.
— In keeping with the Class 50's naval tradition, the Saturday will see No. 50049 formally rededicated by Commodore Robert Bellfield, Royal Navy, Commander Devonport Flotilla, Devonport Dockyard – the former home to training base HMS Defiance. The ceremony will take place at midday at Kidderminster station.
— Thursday evening social at Kidderminster Station.
— Class 50 hauled ballast trains.
— Display of Class 50 models, memorabilia, sales stands and lots more.
— Pre-order your souvenir Class 50 DVD for £4.99: [email protected]
