Stories From The Trees is one of twelve youth-led Emerge festivals taking place across the Midlands on Saturday 21 April 2018. Funded by Spirit of 2012 and managed by The Mighty Creatives, the festival will reinvent Shakespeare stories in one of Walsall’s best-loved locations, with a focus on innovation, inclusion and accessibility.

It will take place in Walsall Arboretum, spanning many of the park’s unique locations. There will be music in the bandstand, poetry on the green and animation in the boathouse…

This multi-media festival will showcase the young people’s many talents, giving them the opportunity to share the art they want to create with the general public.

The work will be anchored in Shakespeare stories. So, the relationship between Lady Macbeth and her husband will become a stop motion animation that is played in the visitor centre. The Tempest will inspire a piece of contemporary dance. And so on.

Our setting will be at the heart of this, with the arboretum’s mix of indoor and outdoor spaces becoming our stage for the day. The public will be encouraged to journey through the park, either with a guide or independently, discovering stories from the trees as they do.

The project is drawing together two labs. One is made up of students at Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy and another is a community group that meets at Walsall Deaf People's Centre, co-ordinated by Creative Factory and Walsall Arboretum.

West Midlands-based theatre company Clown Funeral are working with the young people to create a truly eclectic mix of work, ranging from live performance (song, drama, dance) to participatory work (storytelling, guided tours, open workshops) to pre-made pieces (short films, drawings).

Spread the word, get in touch with [email protected] if you want more information, and we’ll see you on 21 April at midday!
